Vinton Garden Club News; May 30 meeting
The Vinton Garden Club member of the National Garden Clubs, Inc., Central Region, Federated Garden Clubs of Iowa, Inc. and District II met on May 30th at the Marriott in Cedar Rapids. The program was “how to fold napkins fancy”. Each member who attended got to fold 2 napkins in about 8-10 different ways.
VS band alumni invited to play for Alumni Football game; practice June 11
Anyone who would like to perform with the Vinton-Shellsburg Alumni Band is invited to our rehearsal on Monday, June 11th, at 7 p.m., at the Middle School band room (old high school). We will review the school song and pep band favorites to prepare for our performance at the Alumni Football game on June 16. Last year we were not able to

On Monday, May 7th, the afternoon activity was a Pepper Card Party. There were 4 tables of players. Annie Hopkins won 1st place with 298 points. Bill Milne won 2nd place with 275 points. Frances Kelly won 3rd place with 262 points. After cards, refreshments were served by the card club and HACAP provided the beverages.
TRAER POOL COMMITTEE TO HOST THIRD COMMUNITY FORUM IN TAYLOR PARK
On Thursday, June 21, 2012, Traer’s Pool Committee will host the third in a series of public forums seeking public input on the future of the City’s swimming pool and bathhouse. The meeting will be held from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in Taylor Park’s pavilion. The evening’s agenda includes a review of results from the feasibility study, online survey and previous community forum meetings; an in depth look at the preliminary design concept for the renovation project; and a report on fund development for the Make Waves for the Traer Pool, Keep FIT (Families In Traer) Campaign.

As area schools are letting out for summer break and warmer weather is upon us, Benton County Public Health offers the following information to help keep children and adults healthy during the summer swimming season.
Chlorine does not kill all germs instantly and there are some germs that will actually not be killed by chlorine. With this in mind, the following guidelines should be followed when considering a trip to the pool.
AmeriCorps NCCC Maple 1 Team partners with YMCA in Wisconsin

The AmeriCorps NCCC team Maple One has begun their second round project by serving the YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities in Wisconsin. The team worked at Camp Icaghowan outside of Amery, Wisconsin for a couple of weeks before moving on to Camp St Croix in Hudson, Wisconsin on Thursday, May 24.
Maple One assisted in a variety of tasks during their time at Camp Icaghowan including the removal of an old foundation, construction of a leadership building in the woods and the painting of a new boathouse.
Oak 3 helps save the Michigan State Fairgrounds
AmeriCorps NCCC team Oak 3 arrived at their new project site at the Upper Peninsula (UP) State Fairgrounds in Escanaba, MI this past weekend. Before departing Vinton, IA last week, the team experienced some last-minute changes to their travel plans: instead of going directly to Escanaba, they instead headed first for Detroit.
